Donald Oliver "Don" Acrey Sr., 83, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009.

Private services will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mr. Acrey was born in Crandall and grew up in Dallas, where he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in June 1942. He joined the U.S. Army Air Forces Reserve in February 1943, and was called to active duty in the Army Air Forces in August 1943. He served 37 months, with the last 13 months in the 316th Wing of the 20th Air Force on Tinian Island and the 8th Air Force on Okinawa, during which time he served as a navigator-radar observer on a B-29 bomber air crew.

Mr. Acrey married Lea Herron on Sept. 28, 1946. In August 1949, he graduated from Southern Methodist University with a Bachelor of Science degree in geology and a minor in geobotany. His professional career as a geophysicist for Rayflex Exploration Co. was interrupted in 1950, when he was called up for active duty in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, during which he served on a B-29 crew until transferred to Material Air Transport Command. Mr. Acrey was released from active duty in November 1951 and resumed his career in oil and gas exploration with Rayflex Exploration Co. (later incorporated into Texaco Oil Co.). He became an independent consulting geophysicist in 1960 and retired in 1986.

Mr. Acrey held professional membership in the Panhandle Geophysical Society, American Association of Petroleum Geophysicists and Panhandle Producers and Royalty Owners Association, and was an emeritus member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. He was a charter member of the Creation Research Society.

Mr. Acrey was a member and deacon of Gassville Baptist Church in Gassville, Ark., where he and his wife owned a second home. He was a former member of Trinity Baptist Church in Amarillo, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon for 23 years. Mr. Acrey was a former board member of Faith City Ministries in Amarillo.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Lea Acrey; two sons, Donald O. Acrey Jr. and wife Melinda and Richard Acrey, all of Amarillo; a daughter, Cecilia Vincent and husband Gary Vincent of Amarillo; a grandson, Brit Vincent of Amarillo; a great-grandson, Bricen Vincent; a brother, Robert Acrey and children of Dallas; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Clay of Aurora, Mo.

The family suggests memorials be to Citychurch, 205 S. Polk St., Amarillo, TX 79101.
