Elmer J. Skoch

Elmer J. Skoch, 85, retired farmer and stockman, of Seneca, died Saturday, March 10,2007 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka.

He was born on a farm northwest of St. Benedict on February 23,1922, the son of Edward J. and Rose Wichman Skoch.

He attended first through eighth grade at a one room school house in Bellview, and then completed his freshman year at Sts. Peter and Paul High School before transferring to Seneca High School, where he graduated. He then workrd on the family farm, where he stayed until his retirement.

On April 26,1945, he married Mary Elizabeth Buessing at Scared Heart Church in Baileyville. They lived and farmed the family farm until they moved to Seneca in November of 1982. They raised five daughters. After his retirement from the farm, Elmer worked part time for Nemaha County Co-op, Rural Water District #3, Ray's Applemart, and the Conoco.

Elmer was a member of St. Mary's, in St.Benedict, where he had served on the church council and the restoration committe. He was also a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca and the St. Joseph Society. Elmer was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was Grand Knight. He was a member of the 4th Degree, Ponco De Leon Assembly of Seneca. Elmer also served on the Nemaha County Co-op Board from 1961-1975.

In 1957, the Nemaha County Soil Conservation awarded Elmer for his outstanding conservation work.

His hobbies were playing cards and woodworking.

Survivors are his wife, Mary, of the home; five daughters, Betty Schraad of Seneca, Judy Osterhaus of Axtell, Cathy Farrell of Frankfort, Patty Hasenkamp of Burchard,NE and Barb Bille of Bonner Springs: two sisters, Ester Enneking of Centralia, and Eleanor Schultejans, of Anamosa,IA; 17 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

His father, also at the age of 85, died also on March 10th.

His great-grandaughter, Ariel E. Esslinger and great-great grand-daughter, Shawna Brook Esslinger, died January 26,2007.

Rosaries were prayed on Monday at 2 and 7PM at the Lauer Funeral Home. Don Hardensen read a eulogy after a rosary was recited in the honor of Elmer Father Mike Koller celebrated the Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM on Tuesday March 13,2007 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church. The church choir provided music; the soloist was Cyril Steinlage; the lector was Lisa Mathewson. Giftbearers were Jill Gonterwitz, Julie Farrell and Janell Farrell; and the servers were Joshua Schraad, Sarah Mathewson, Zachary Phillips, and Courtney Mathewson; Eucharistic ministers were Lisa Mathewson, Amy Buessing and Julie Farrell. The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus provided an honor guard at all the services.

Burial was in the church cemetery. Honorary pallbeaers were Willie Tangeman, Regis Tanking, Stan Feldkamp, Jim Reitiz, Jerry Claas and Paul Strathman. Pallbearers were Bryan Schraad, John Schraad, Jim Schraad, Randy Osterhaus, Scott Osterhaus, Tom Farrell, Michael Bille and Matthew Bille.

Memorials may be given for the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital and Sts. Peter and Paul School, sent in care of the family.
