Micajah's father, and most of his children bear the surname spelling of O'NEAL, as do many of the public records found on him. However, his gravestone reads O'NEIL.
He was the paternal grandson of William O'Neal and Eleanor Serena Hinton; and gr-grandson of Micajah O'Neal and Alsbeth Clary Richardson, all of Johnston County. He is a direct descendant of John O'Neal (b. ca. 1730) of Virignia that first came to Johnston County ca. 1750 and married Patience Exum. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of William T. Robertson & Mourning Holder of Wake County; and nephew of Dr. James Battle Robertson of Clayton.
Mike inherited wealth and land upon from his father, but after the Civil War and emancipation, much of their wealth was diminished. He continued to tend the land until 1900, when he surprisingly became a shoe cobbler in Clayton, a profession he remained in until his death.
Mike was about age 25 when he married (1st) in about 1874 to Sarah Hinnant of Johnston County by whom 5 known children were born -- all sons:

* John Battle O'Neal (1879-1960)
* Bryant H. O'Neal (1882-1918)
* James Battle O'Neal (1881-1963)
* Everettt Veasey O'Neal (1889-1967)
Sarah Hinnant O'Neil died sometime between 1883-1893. In 1895, the now 46-year old Mike married (2nd) in 1895 to to 28-year old Nancy Jane Edwards, the widow of Rufus Hare. This marriage produced 6 more children (2 boys/4 girls):
* Ethel O'Neal STARLING (1896-1976)
* Stella O'Neil YOUNG (1898-1994)
* Ernest William O'Neil (1902-1980)
* Earl O'Neil (1905-1906)
* Janie O'Neil JOHNSON (1908-1982)
