Mildred Nina Ruehl Putnam, 98, of Arab died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009.

She was born in Cullman to Vera and Casper Ruehl. She was married to Coy Putnam, who passed away in the 1960s.

After finishing business courses in Birmingham, she worked for the county agent until her marriage and move to Arab in 1935. With unwavering dedication, she devoted her life to love and help provide for her family through a wellspring of inner resolve and quiet actions that spoke more than her words.

She focused on a productive home life with her gardening, sewing, cooking and home maintenance skills. She also worked some retail positions in Arab, attended Snead College for a short time and did some substitute teaching. With her children in school, she helped with projects and band boosters.

She is a former member of the Arab Garden Club and a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 50 plus years. In later life she enjoyed traveling to other areas of the country and to Hawaii and Canada. She is the last of her generation from the neighborhood families of more than 60 years that included the Brannons, Carters, Campbells, Kirbys, Padgetts and Skimores.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Cullman.

She is survived by her sister: Gladys Graham; sister-in-law: Joyce Putnam; daughter and son-in-law: Sandra and Andy Kaye; grandchildren and in-laws: Rhonda and Donnie Lindsey, Alan and Angie Putnam, Sherry and Corey Hall; five great-grandchildren; and a several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son: Milan Putnam; and brother: Marvin Ruehl.

The funeral was at Gober Funeral Chapel, with participation by the Rev. Ronald Earwood, her daughter, grandchildren and Eastern Star members.
