In about 1888, August married Dorthea Thies. (sometimes spelled Theis.) The couple had 3 sons, Oscar August, Joseph Walter, and George. They named their only daughter Dorthea, after her mother. In the 1900 census, Dorthea is listed as having had 5 children, with only 4 living. We don't know the name of the child who passed away prior to 1900.
August was a tinner and a plumber. He owned his own buisness in Clay Center, Kansas. Several of his son's worked in the business, carring on in the business after August passed away.
In 1901, August's mother, Johanna, came to the United States. She lived with August and his family in Clay Center.
According to the 1920 Census, the family lived at 816 Court St. in Clay Center. They owned the home free and clear. The census also states that both August and his wife, Dora, were naturalized in 1893.
August passed away on March 20, 1922. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Clay County, Kansas.
