On June 2, 1953 he married Elaine Mueller at St. Charles Catholic Church in Charlesburg.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine, of rural Chilton; his son, Tom (LuAnn) Mertens of rural Chilton; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer (Jonas) Bradley, Christopher (Tammy Beck) Mertens and Valerie Mertens and her fiancé Andrew Gulig Jr.; 2 great-grandchildren, Josie & Gretchen Mertens; a brother, Norman (Loyola) Mertens of New Holstein; a brother-in-law, Merlin (Ruth) Mueller of St. Peter; 3 sisters-in-law, Johanna (Joe) Weber of New Holstein, Judy Schmitz of Chilton and Shirley (John) Pickart of Johnsburg. Preceding him in death were his parents, and a sister, Hildegard Winkel.
Burial in Holy Rosary Catholic Church Cemetery in New Holstein.
