Catherine Bender, the fifth oldest of the nine children born to Peter Bender and Catherine Mallmann, was born near Henry, IL. She received her education in the local school, and grew up on the family farm. She was united in marriage to Edward Charles Leibel on October 3, 1883, at Camp Grove, IL. Edward and Catherine lived near Henry, IL after their marriage until 1885. In that year they moved to a farm near Humphrey, NE, where they lived for ten years. In 1895 they moved to a farm southeast of Elgin, NE. They farmed until 1926, when they retired to a new home in Elgin.
