Mrs. Kucera was a career elementary school teacher, beginning with the Bedford City Schools in 1963, as a kindergarten teacher at Glendale School. She left Bedford and taught at Hickham Air Force Base in Hawaii, where she also continued her education at the University of Hawaii. When she returned to Bedford, there was no position available. She was hired immediately by the Warrensville Heights School System. She taught kindergarten at John Dewey School for more than 30 years until retiring. Since then she was an active substitute teacher in the Bedford School system. She taught at Central school in Bedford the Tuesday before her death. Commonly called "Miss K", she was highly respected by students, parents and fellow teachers alike. She was a passionate sports fan, especially for Ohio State football, the Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavaliers.
Kucera was a life-long resident of Bedford and passed away in the same hospital in which she was born. She graduated from Bedford High School Class of 1958. She received an Associate in Arts degree from Stephens College, a bachelor of Science in Education from Baldwin-Wallace College and a master of education from the Universty of Hawaii.
Karen was the daughter of Leo J. Kucera, deceased, and Grace (Marsh) Kucera; sister of Lee M.(Joan)Kucera of Moreland Hills and James M. Kucera, deceased; sister-in-law of Marty (Frank)Lid; aunt of James L. Kucera, Michael A. Kucera, Laurie L.(Jeffrey)Davis, Kristine G. Kucera, Mark (Ann) Kucera, Beth (Jeffrey) Drebus; and great-aunt of seven. Burial was at Bedford Cemetery. (Bedford Times-Register, Thurs. Feb.23, 2006)
