Daughter of Olive Almeda Caldwell and John Bartholomew Hughston. Married to Paul Frowein who emigrated to the United States in 1903 from Elberfeld, Wuppertal, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. He was a bookkeeper.


Following her husband's early death from pneumonia in 1922, Dora was left with four children ages one through 12 to support. The 1930 US Federal Census finds her working as an assistant superintendent at the State Industrial School for Girls in St. Andrews, Richland County SC. Eldest child, Emma Louise, was a roomer at Spartanburg County Nurses Home in Spartanburg County SC. Sons, Paul Hughston, Frederick William and John Newton Frowein, were at the Thomson Orphanage in Clinton, Laurens County SC.


Dora's obituary states that she was a retired employee of the State Industrial School for Girls and that she also worked for a number of years as the Thomson Orphanage dietician.


Her children went to college and served in the military during World War II. Daughter Louise was a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army Nurse Corps.
