Madge P. Ribken, 91, an eight-year resident of the Lake Chelan area, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001 at Regency Care Center.
She was born Dec. 6, 1909 at Meta, KY, the daughter of John W. and Flora (Bevins) Pinson. She attended school at Pikeville, KY, where she graduated from Pikeville High School in 1930. Following her graduation, she began teaching school in Pike County, KY.
On Sept. 9, 1929, she was married to Norman K. Burke, Sr.
She continued teaching until W.W. II, where she was active in the American Red Cross. She was also employed in the production of military aircraft at Ypsilanti, MI.
In 1949, she moved to Lemoore, CA, where she received her credentials for teaching grade school. During summers, she attended Fresno State University to further her education.
She continued teaching special education (children) for many years. She resided at Arroyo Grande, CA, for 10 years.
In 1952, she met and married George Ribken at Reno, NV. Following her retirement in 1975, they resided in California.
They moved to Lexington, KY in 1977 and Mr. Ribken preceded her in death in 1984. She then returned to Lamoore, CA.
In 1993, she moved to Chelan to be near her son, John Burke.
She was a member of the National Education Association and was active in the Democratic Party.
Survivors include three sons, Norman (John) Burke of Manson, Ken Burke of Pikeville, KY, Francis M. Burke of Ocoee, FL; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Precht Rose Chapel. Services and interment at Bent Ridge Cemetery will be Monday, Sept. 10, 2001.
Local arrangements are Precht Rose Chapel, Chelan.
