George C. Hoffmann, 89, of Springfield died at 9 a.m. Monday at his residence.

He was born Nov. 6, 1903, in Chicago, the son of George and Katherine Gavin Hoffmann. He married Ines Catron in 1929. Mr. Hoffmann attended the University of Chicago and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. After graduating in 1925, he attended the University of Chicago Law School and was admitted to the Bar in 1928. He entered the private practice of law in Springfield with his wife and father-in-law, Bayard Lacey Catron, in the firm of Catron and Hoffmann, from 1929 to 1944. He and his wife then opened the firm of Hoffmann and Hoffmann from 1945 to 1990. Mr. Hoffmann's legal activities included master in chancery, Sangamon County Circuit Court, from 1945 to 1951; member of the Sangamon County Bar Association, serving as its president in 1944; member of the Illinois State Bar Association, serving as real estate section chairman from 1951 to 1953 and as the committee on association publications chairman from 1963 to 1965; member of the American Bar Association. He served as legislative counsel for the Illinois State Bar Association and Chicago Bar Association from 1953 to 1960. He received the University of Chicago Citation for Public Service in 1955; Copley First Citizen Award in 1969; Springfield Sertoma Club Service to Mankind Award in 1969; Sangamon State University honorary doctor of laws in 1982. He was named Wagonmaster of the 1985 Sangamon County Bar Association annual Thanksgiving Day Hike.

Mr. Hoffmann was a member and trustee of First Presbyterian Church; past president of the Sangamon County Heart Association; board member of the Illinois Heart Association; past president of the Springfield Urban League; board member of Child and Family Service of Sangamon County; past president of the Midday Luncheon Club of Springfield; University of Chicago Alumni Association; past president of the Vachel Lindsay House Fund; and was chairman of the Springfield Committee for Higher Education.

Surviving are his wife, Ines; four sons, George of Indianapolis, Ind., Donald of Kansas City, Mo., John of Champaign and Frederick of Springfield; thirteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Gordon McLean officiating. Burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
