Helena Heller was the daughter of John Gerhard Bernard Heller and Marie Gesina Rosina Thede. Marie was born January 3, 1850 in Germany and died February 6, 1879 In Minnesota. After Marie died, John married Anna Korte on November 25, 1879 in Marystown, Scott County, Minnesota. John was born July 23, 1840 in Germany and died August 1904 in Mount Angel, Oregon. Anna was born abt 1833 in Germany. John was a widow by the 1900 Census and living with his daughter Helena and Alexander Scharbach in Mount. Angel, Oregon.

Daily Capital Journal, Salem, Oregon, May 7,1941- Alex and Helena Scharbach Married Fifty Years

Mr. and Mrs. Alex Scharbach of 1630 North Winter street, Salem, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Monday, May 5, 1941, at St. Luke's parish in Woodburn. High mass was celebrated at 8:15 a.m. by Rev. Father Bonaventura, O.S.B. of St. Joseph's parish, Portland, who has been a life-long friend of the family. The Gregorian chant was sung by Raymond, Bernard, Ambrose and Robert Smith of St. Paul. Ave Maria was sung at the offertory by Bernard Smith.
Corsages of sweet peas and fern were worn by the women and a single red carnation by each of the men. The honored guest, Mrs. Alex Scharbach, and her daughter Mrs. Sylvester Smith( Julianna Scharbach ), wore golden necklaces which had been given to Mrs. Alex Scharbach by her mother and are more than 100 years old. The original chain was separated to make two necklaces.

Mr. Scharbach was born in Germantown, Wisconsin and came to Gervais July 19, 1875. Helena Heller came from Hanover, Germany, in 1875 at the age of three years and the family first made their home in Shakopee, Minnesota, moving to Mt. Angel, Oregon in 1888. Mr. and Mrs. Scharbach were married in St. Benedict's old monastery in Mt. Angel, May 5, 1891, with Rev. Father Anselm, O.S.B, officiating. The maid of honor was Anna Miller Woods and the best man was the latter Peter Scharbach of Woodburn. Three children were born to this union, Lawrence Scharbach of Silverton, Sylvester Scharbach of Salem and Julianna Scharbach Smith of Woodburn. There are also three grandsons and four granddaughters.

Dinner was served at St. Luke's hall in Woodburn at noon Monday. Miss Clara Smith of St. Paul prepared the dinner and the Misses Cecilia and Rose Smith served. During the dinner hour the Smith brothers of St. Paul sang "The Bells of St. Mary's," "The Rosary," and "Just a Wearyin' for You." Speakers were Father Neugebauer of Salem, Frank Scharbach, Sylvester Smith and the honored guest, Alex Scharbach.

Covers were placed for the golden weds Mr. and Mrs. Alex Scharbach of Salem; Rev. Father Bonaventura, O.S.B. of St. Joseph's Portland; Rev. Father Daniel O'Connell of St. Joseph's, Salem; Rev. Father Neugebauer of St. Vincent de Paul, Salem; Rev. Father J McGrenra of St. Luke's, Woodburn; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Scharbach, Bernard, Marietta and Alfred of Silverton, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Scharbach, Janice and Diane of Salem, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Smith and Julie of Woodburn, Mary Oswald, Anna Miller Woods, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Smith, Ambrose and Robert Smith, of St. Paul, Mrs. Stephanie Scharbach of Mt. Angel, Ben Scharbach and Frank Scharbach of Idaho.

Cards, music and dancing were enjoyed during the afternoon. Music for the dancing was furnished by Ray Tyson's orchestra.A buffet supper was served at 5 o'clock for 50.
