Daniel Balmer was a son of Daniel & Harriet (Fisher) Balmer. In 1860 he was a carpenter living with his family in Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Philadelphia August 21, 1861, and mustered into federal service there September 10 as a private with Co. I, 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry (108th Pa), but soon promoted to sergeant. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 1, 1864, at Portsmouth, Virginia, promoted to 2nd lieutenant to date June 2, 1864, but discharged by surgeon's certificate to date December 9, 1864, reason as yet unknown. On November 30, 1865, he applied for a disability pension and received it. He was a member of Elizabethtown's Good Post No. 502, G.A.R., which is misidentified in his obituaries as Post 500.
