Julia Ann Rex, 70, of Stacyville, Iowa, died Tuesday (March 24, 2009) at Stacyville Community Nursing Home.
She was born Sept. 3, 1938, to Julius and Laura Beyer, in Osage, Iowa. After graduating from St. Ansgar High School, she enlisted in the Army to be trained as a nurse. Following three years in the Army, she enrolled in the School of Practical Nursing Program at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester and graduated as an LPN. She was proud of her diploma since it was signed by C.W. Mayo.
She began her nursing career on the Joseph Floor at Saint Marys, which at the time was the hospital's burn unit care floor. She also worked at the Samaritan in Rochester, and furthered her career at the Minneapolis Veterans Hospital as well as the Des Moines (Iowa) Veterans Hospital. She truly enjoyed taking care of patients, especially veterans.
On June 14, 1980, she married Roe Rex.
She fought a brave battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and continued to educate others about the serious dangers of smoking. Two of her favorite activities were horse racing and bingo, and she practiced a strong religious faith. She also loved visits with family and friends, as well as sending and receiving e-mails.
She is survived by her daughter, Angela Dieterich of Rochester; one grandson, Daniel Dieterich of Rochester; brothers, David (Bonnie) Beyer of St. Ansgar and Wayne Beyer of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; sisters, JoAnn Schiemann of Northwood, Iowa, and Bonnie (Roy) Grimm of Riceville, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother.
Visitation will be an hour before the service at the church.
Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home of St. Ansgar is in charge of arrangements.
