Joseph Mimitz, 78, of 12 Sylvia Heights, died Sunday at a local nursing home. He owned and operated Amherst Masons until his retirement in 1973. Born in this town, he graduated from Hopkins Academy in 1942 and attended the former Northampton Commercial College. He was a communicant of Most Holy Redeemer Church and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Catamount Sportsmen's Club in Colrain, the Coachmen International Club of Massachusetts and American Legion Post 271. His wife, the former Edna Steinbeck, died in 1999. He leaves two nephews, Kim Steinbeck and Marshall Steinbeck and a niece, Patrice Denison, all of Hadley. A graveside service will be held Thursday morning in Plainville Cemetery. Drozdal Funeral Home is in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sunbridge of Hadley Recreation Fund, 20 N. Maple St., Hadley, MA 01035.
