Judge J. D. Thomas,ex associate judge of Cambria County and for many years a prominent business man of Ebensburg,died suddenly yesterday at 4: 20 o'clock of heart trouble,at the home of his daughter,Mrs H.C. Bertram,in Altoona,whom he had gone to visit on Wednesday afternoon.He was stricken about 1o'clock and expired in four hours
For many years John D. Thomas had been active in Cambria County affairs both in business and a political way. He was born in Germany in 1832 and was brought to this country by his parents,John and Ann Mary Huller Thomas,when he was two years old. The family located in Chest Township,where they lived for many years. In 1862 John Thomas married Miss Elizabeth Todd.After her death he married to miss Margaret Keets,of Pittsburgh.
Early in the 60's judge Thomas began to take an active part in the political affairs of Cambria County.He served as a poor director for three years,being elected in 1867. In 1876 he was elected associate judge of this county and served five years in that position. Since the election of judge O'Conner he had been a special court officer.At various times the deceased conducted hotels in Carrolltown,Summit,South Fork, and this place.He was the proprietor of the largest shoe store in Ebensburg for a number of years before he entered the hotel business.
John Thomas is survived by the following children: George of Ohio,Harry of Barnesboro,John of Pittsburgh,Frank of Carrolltown,Mrs Bertram of Altoona, and Mrs M.J. Stoltz of Ebensburg.He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Jacob of Patton; Valentine of Carrolltown; Martin of Chest Township; Mrs George Kibler of Elder Township and Mrs Christina Langbein of Patton. The remains were taken from Altoona to Ebensburg this morning and the funeral services will be held on Saturday morning in the catholic church of which the deceased was member, with a requiem high mass. Interment will be made in the old catholic cemetery.
