Clara M. Spielman, 89, of Baileyville, died Wednesday, January 7, 1998, at Cambridge Place, an assisted living facility, in Marysville.

She was born December 16, 1908, on a farm north of Seneca, the daughter of August and Clara Shump Kramer. She grew up there and graduated from Sts. Peter and Paul High School in Seneca in 1926. She attended the Kansas Agricultural College in Manhattan, KS, and earned a teaching certificate. She taught at a rural school southeast of Seneca. She had learned to play the organ when she was growing up and played for Sts. Peter and Paul Church.

On April 23, 1930, she married Leo J. Spielman at the Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Seneca. They lived and farmed southeast of Baileyville for 48 years. In August of 1978 they retired from farming and moved into Baileyville where they built a home. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1980. Her husband, Leo, died July 26, 1984. In September 1994 she moved to an apartment in Cambridge Place where she could have assisted living.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, a member and a past president of the Altar Society at the church, and the Benedictine Oblates all of Baileyville. She liked playing cards and was a member of the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital Card Club at Seneca. She enjoyed quilting and made quilts for her family. Flowers were important to Clara in her home, garden and yard.

Survivors are three sons; Kenneth of Muscotah, Larry of Topeka and Jerry of Seneca; three daughters, JoAnn Spielman of Topeka, Janice Stueve of Indianapolis, IN, Kathy Kopp of Beattie; 30 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sons, an infant, Gerald Spielman on Jan 13, 1938, Richard Spielman on April 28, 1982, Alan Spielman on April 22, 1990, a daughter, Delores Koch on October 11, 1997; five brothers Edward, Joseph, August, Frank and Henry; and three sisters, Amelia Buessing, Rose Kramer and Florence Voet.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville. Burial in the church cemetery.
