John was the son of German Immigrants John & Mary Grau. He was the oldest child and had 3 younger sisters; Anna, Julia, & Margaret.
When he was but 7 years old both his parents had died. He was then sent to live with an aunt and uncle to live. When he was in his teens he decided to leave and make it on his own. He had said that he was treated very unkindly by this aunt and uncle.
He served 3 tours in the Army during the Civil War in which he was severly wounded too. After he was discharged he married Mary Ellen Burnside. Together they had 11 children including a set of twins.
