Served a Mayor of Austell 1910-1911

Luke Garrett Middle School was named after the late Dr. Luke Garrett, Sr., a prominent citizen of Austell. Dr. Garrett spent most of his life in service to the Austell community, and he was a friend of education. He began his practice of medicine in Austell in 1902 and in 1908 married Mrs Candacy R Cloud, a young widow with two smallchildren.

He was a member of the Austell Methodist Church and activein the Lathan Masonic Lodge #12.

Dr. Garrett served on the local school board from about 1910 until when the the local school was consolidated with the county system in 1945. During his time on the board, Dr. Garrett had been known to personally borrow money in order to pay teachers during hard times. He was a graduate of the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons and maintained his medical practice in Austell. He died at age 68 on April 13, 1948.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR DR. GLENN GARRETT

Funeral services for Dr. Luke Glenn Garrett, Sr., 68, of Austell, were held Thursday afternoon in the auditorium of the Austell school.

Dr. Garrett, widely known through this section of Georgia, died at his home Tuesday afternoon. Rev. G. W. Southard, Rev. D. M. Starnes, Rev. William Tyson, Rev. J. A. Landers and Rev. Robert Hart officiated. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Austell with Albert M. Dobbins, funeral director, of Marietta, in charge.

Dr. Garrett is survived by his wife, two sons, Dr. Luke G. Garrett, Jr., and John E. Cloud, both of Austell; a daughter, Miss Louisa Cloud, of Austell; two brothers, Q. L. Garrett, of Waycross, and Dr. Steve A. Garrett, of Atlanta; three sisters, Mrs. W. M. Hays, of Douglasville; Mrs. E. P. McDaniel, of Columbia, S. C., and Mrs. L. E. Paschal, of Atlanta, and two grandchildren.
