Louis W. Fritz was born December 30, 1836, in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.

In the 1860 Census he was living in New York Ward 17, District 6, in the household of Peter and Louisa Arnold.

On April 23, 1861, Louis enlisted and was a private with Company K, Illinois 11th Infantry. On July 30, 1861 his rank was listed as Corporal and he was still with Company K, 11th Illinois Infantry. His military records show he was 5' 5-1/2" tall with brown hair, hazel eyes and light complexion. Louis mustered out July 30, 1864 at Springfield, Illinois.

He married Adeline Vinetta Rosenstiel on November 28, 1867, in Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois. Adeline was born October 17, 1847, near Lena, Stephenson County, Illinois, the daughter of Christian Wilhelm and Rachel Amelia (Pickard) Rosenstiel. They had the following known children:

1. Ellen Wilhelmina (Fritz) Henderson
2. Lillian Armena (Fritz) Waller
3. John Louis Fritz
4. Albert Fritz
5. Frederick William Fritz
6. Charles Henry Fritz

Louis had been sick all of his married life and he died June 21, 1884, in Illinois, probably in Champaign County. He was buried in the Craw Cemetery in Sadorus, Champaign County, Illinois. Adeline then married Lewis L. Woodyard on August 1, 1884, but they divorced December 1892. Adeline died March 20, 1899, in Altoona, Wilson County, Kansas. She was buried there in the Altoona Cemetery.
