Maria was born abt 1832 in Hollingstedt, Gottorp, Schleswig when it was still part of Denmark (before it combined and became Schleswig-Holstein, Germany). She was a daughter of Johan Mauderer (or Manderer?) and Margaretha (nee Franzen). She married Hinrich/Henrich Hinrichsen about 1851 in Schleswig, Denmark, and they had at least 6 children before he died in about 1869. Maria came to America with 3 sons in 1876 and they settled first in Scott County, Iowa. Maria married (2nd) March 1882 in Crawford County, Iowa, her brother-in-law Claus Hinrichsen.
