August Friedrich Wilhelm Ewald was born in Thomsdorf, Templin, Brandenburg, Prussia to Regine Christine Peter Ewald and Christian Friedrich Ewald. He was one of nine children, four died in early childhood. His two brothers Carl/Charles and Johann Friedrich "Wilhelm" immigrated with their mother to Wisconsin in 1862. I can find no record of his father Christian in Wisconsin not did he immigrate with them. August, wife Dorothea immigrated to Crediton Canada following his wife's family in 1882 then on to Michigan in 1887.
August's first wife was Friederike Henriette Schoenbeck. They had two children, August in 1857 and Friederica in 1861. His wife Friederike died a month after their daughter's birth.
August and Dorothea went on to have 11 more children. Their first son Herman born in 1863 died at 27 days. Six year old son Carl died aboard the ship and was buried at sea. Children August and Wilhelmine Brown remained in Canada. Daughter Anna Glombitza moved to Pennsylvania, while Friederica Klump, Marie (Mary)Young, Wilhelm, Fred and Otto (Art) came to Michigan. Daughter Emilia/Amelia Kasserman lived near Elkton until about 1906 then moved to Saskatchan with her husband Jacob and family. Another son Herman left at age 19 and was not heard from again.
