Adam Klein Sr. was from the German settlement of Stahl am Tarlyk (Stepnoje) along the Volga River in Russia. He was born Johann Adam Klein. Records show his parents were Johann Wilhelm Klein and Maria Katharina "Katie" Brase. Adam married Louisa (Louise) Maier (Meier) around 1889. They had six children in Russia, Mary, Peter, Henry, Marie, Margaret, and Lois.
Adam's youngest brother Henry set out for the United States in 1897, and Peter in 1906. In 1907, Adam brought his family through Ellis Island, and came to Fresno with the help of his brother Henry Klein. Henry already had a house in Fresno's "Rooshian Town" at 427 C Street. Louise was pregnant with Adam Jr while on the ship, and he became their first child born in Fresno.
Adam's first job was with the railroad, but he had a hearing problem and had to quit. He then was fortunate to get a job at Zapp's Park as the manager and keeper of the zoo. He also cared for Mrs. Zapp's show horse. When Mr. Zapp died around the end of World War I, the park closed. Adam then bought 20 acres near Biola and began farming. Later in life they moved back to west Fresno on F street and stayed there until Louise passed away in 1953.
Adam lived until the age of 90. It was written by a granddaughter that Adam Sr ended every prayer with the plea: "O God, if only I'm worthy enough to enter into your kingdom and sit at your feet".
