Emma June Abernethy Huffman
Mrs. Emma June Abernethy Huffman, 75, of Hildebran, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2009, at Catawba Valley Medical Center following a period of declining health.
Emma June was born on Jan. 6, 1934, in Burke County, to the late James Carl Abernethy and Maudie Cook Abernethy.
She worked as a manager for her family's business,
Abernethy and Huffman Grocery, for more than 47 years. Emma June was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Hildebran, where she was active in the Sunday School class and was known by many church members as the candy lady. She loved doing things for others and tried to be a blessing to someone every day of her life.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Lee Huffman; and three brothers, B.J. Abernethy, Howard C. Abernethy and Harold C. Abernethy.
Survivors include her son, Dennis Ray Huffman of the home; two brothers, Larry J. Abernethy and family of Hickory and Julius Abernethy and family of Atlanta, Ga.; her sister, Iona Hamby and family of Hudson; her grandson, John David Huffman; four loved nieces and nine loved nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church Hildebran with the Rev. Ronald Arndt officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese. A special thanks from the family to all her friends, family and supporters who have been praying for her during her illness.
