Walter was born January 30, 1935 in Stockton, Alabama to Jessie Byrd and Julia Camilla Catrett Emmanuel. He grew up in Stockton and was a 1954 graduate of Baldwin County High. He then entered the U.S. Army where he served for over 20 years prior to his retirement.
He later attended Wallace College HVAC and sheet metal school. Walter was employed as a technician and sheet metal roofing specialist with ESMAC in Enterprise for 33 years prior to his retirement. He was of the Methodist faith.
He is predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Aurelia Emmanuel, his second wife, Frances Emmanuel, a brother, Robert Emmanuel and four sisters, Thelma Gibson, Mary Pierce, Ruby Fail and Alberta Psareas.
