Funeral: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen, with Jake Vincent and Wayne Frase officiating. Entombment: Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria.
Walter was born March 27, 1924, in Cleburne. He graduated from Cleburne High School and attended TCU on a music scholarship. Walter also attended and graduated from Baylor Medical School in Houston. Dr. Edwards was the director of emergency medical services at Daniel Freeman Hospital in Inglewood, Calif., where he established one of the first trauma centers. He was one of the first physicians to practice and establish emergency medicine as a specialty. The California Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians gives an annual award in his name.
Dr. Edwards proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed golfing and many years of traveling all over the U.S. in his RV with his wife, Mary Jane.
Dr. Edwards was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary Jane Edwards.
Survivors: Daughter Gwynne Fleener (Randy); son, Tom Edwards(Monica); seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
