He was a son of Henry and Susan Kesler Balthaser. He married Jennie F. Dickson in 1889 and they had three daughters, Bertha, Tennessee, and Hazel. Jennie died in 1902 and in 1904 he married Sudie Coley, with whom he had one daughter, Rubye Lee. Their marriage ended in divorce, and in 1919, he married Christine Ruehl, with whom he had no children.

He was a United Brethren minister.
