On April 23, 1957, Richard was united in marriage with Beverly Berends at the Parkersburg Christian Reformed Church. They made their home in Austinville, Iowa, where he worked for Henry Kromminga for a year. They moved and farmed one mile west of Kesley, Iowa for 43 years, where he also raised grain and livestock. In 2001 they moved to town in Aplington when he retired from farming and then worked seasonally for the Kesley Elevator.
Richard was a member of the Kesley Presbyterian Church for many years where he served as a Deacon and Elder. When they retired and moved to town he became a member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington. Through the years he enjoyed bowling, playing cards, visiting and shooting the breeze with his friends and family. Richard loved a good joke and had a good sense of humor. He loved his family and especially enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was very proud of all of their activities he attended.
On Thursday, May 07, 2009, Richard died at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa of cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Schipper on October 23, 2002; one daughter, Robyn in infancy; his parents; and two brothers, George A. and Arnold Schipper.
Richard is survived by one son, Randall (Anne) Schipper of Ackley, Iowa; two daughters, Rhonda (Kenny) Meester of Parkersburg, Iowa and Renae (John) Schachterle of Ackley, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Brad (Jamie) Meester, Brooke (Nathan) Merrill, Brittney Meester, Amanda and Kyle Schipper and Katie and Jacob Schachterle; three great-granddaughters, Lily Meester, Emma Meester and Chloe Meester; one great-grandson, Aiden Merrill; one brother, John R. (Clarene) Schipper of Ackley, Iowa; three sisters, Bena (Floyd) Bierman of Dumont, Iowa, Anna (Royce) Harms of Wellsburg, Iowa and Marion (Ken) Nelson of Iowa City, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Marion Schipper of Aplington and Lorraine (John) Kalkwarf of Aplington, Iowa; and his special friend, Esther Schipper of Aplington, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 11, 2009, at the First Reformed Church in Aplington with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the First Reformed Church in Aplington and continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
