Harriet Persson, of Chisago City, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Fairview Lakes Hospital, Wyoming, Minn., at the age of 91.

Evelyn Harriet was born in Boyd, Minn., to Peter and Ida Krogstad, on Jan. 26, 1912. She was the youngest of seven children.

Her name was shortened to Harriet when she first went to school and three other Evelyns showed up in her class. She graduated from Boyd High School in 1929, went on to Normal Teacher Training and later St. Cloud Teachers' College to become a teacher. Her teaching career spanned 42 years, first in country schools, later Lindstrom, Kenyon, and Chisago City. She came to Chisago City to teach and according to her story the local Swedes told her it was OK for her to stay nine months, but then she had to go away for the summer because they couldn't stand a Norwegian around here any longer than that.

However, she met and married George Persson and she stayed here for the rest of her life. They settled into their house by the lake, where she lived until 2001. Daughter, Linda was born in 1945 and Harriet took a little break from teaching to be a mom. She returned to Chisago City Public Schools in 1952, serving as a sixth-grade teacher, later in fifth and fourth grades until retirement in 1978.

Her life was full of simple pleasures––her Lord Jesus, family, friends, her lake view, good books, the newspaper, and winning seasons of all the Minnesota sports teams.

After a short stay in Parmly Nursing Home, to mend a broken arm, Harriet moved into Vindauga View Assisted Living. She had a wonderful year living there, sharing her treasured wit and stories with her loved ones, friends, and the staff.

She is preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents, Peter and Ida Krogstad; and her brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda and husband, Del Birk, of Eagle, Colorado; three grandchildren: Carrie Witt, Tug Birk and Cody Birk, and a great-grandson, Hobie Matthew Witt. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held Oct. 6, 2003, at Parmly Chapel with lunch following at the Vindauga View dining room.
