The son of Henry or Heinrich Ulrich, in 1860 he was a laborer living with several brothers in Greene Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and blue eyes. His children's death certificates and the 1850 census point to a German birth, although the 1860 census claims Pennsylvania, which is likely incorrect. Both the 1850 and 1860 censuses list his birth year as ca. 1837.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-four in Chambersburg August 14, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia August 21 as a private with Co. D, 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry (108th Pa). He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer November 18, 1863, at Portsmouth, Virginia, and honorably discharged by special order August 13, 1865.

He married Anna M. Neuroth and fathered John (b. @1867), George E. (b. 04/22/69), Anna Marie (b. 11/17/70 - married Ludwig Henry Kraft), Frank Henry (b. 09/29/74), and Ellie S. (b. 08/13/77 - married Harry E. McKenzie). No obituary was found in any online newspaper archive.

Given his stated age at enlistment and the age on the 1850 and 1860 censuses, it is possible that the birth year shown above is incorrect.
