MONROE - John "Farney" Knipschild, age 91, of Monroe, died Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at home. He was born April 21, 1916, in Monroe, the son of John H. and Bertha (Haack) Knipschild. He was a 1934 graduate of Monroe High School, being one of the starting five on the basketball team, and attended Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. John entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on Nov. 6, 1941, in Milwaukee, serving with the 1380 Military Police Co. in Panama and Guatemala during World War II. He was discharged on Oct. 16, 1945, at Santa Ana, Calif., as a PFC and received the American Theater Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and American Defense Service Medal. John and Edna M. Hanson were married on Jan. 12, 1945, in Madison. John worked as a U.S. Postal Carrier for the Monroe Post Office for 32 years retiring in 1976. He was a member of Zilmer-Riley American Legion Post No. 84 for 62 years.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Edna Knipschild of Monroe; a son, Robert C. (Gloria) Knipschild of Janesville; a daughter, Karen A. Knipschild of Madison; two granddaughters, Julie Knipschild of Minneapolis, Minn., and Kristin Knipschild of Madison; a sister, Katherine J. Knipschild Siedschlag of Monroe; a niece, Amy Siedschlag Solum of Burlington; and a nephew, Mark Siedschlag of Atlanta, Ga. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2007, at SHRINER-HAGER-GOHLKE FUNERAL HOME 1455 Mansion Drive and 18th Avenue in Monroe, with the Rev. David Busker officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday at the Funeral Home.
