Civil War: Company H, 7th California Infantry

John Lowre More was the son of Scottish immigrants Robert More and Elisabeth Smith. His parents left Scotland for Canada soon after the birth of John and his twin brother Adam in 1831. Adam died at sea before the family arrived in Canada. The More family was living at Enfield, Hartford, Connecticut by 1840 (1840 US Census). John left home sometime before 1850 and headed to California to become a prospector. He enlisted at Bear Valley as a private October 30, 1864, and was mustered into Company H, 7th California Infantry, December 10. Private More was posted to Fort Mason, Arizona Territory, from July 1865 to January 1866. He returned to California with his company and was mustered out at Drum Barracks (Wilmington) March 1, 1866. After the war he returned to a life of prospecting. John was a miner in Cochise County, Arizona Territory, in the 1880's. He appears on the 1886 membership roster of Bisbee's Kehoe Post, Grand Army of the Republic. John filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Sawtelle, California, October 1, 1894, and received application No. 1,161,117 and certificate No. 981,541. Just a few days later he was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Sawtelle on October 19. John remained at the Sawtelle home until he died. His Sawtelle Home record indicates Connecticut as his place of birth and provides his brother Robert S. More of Pierce County, Washington, as his next of kin. John Lowre More was buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery. John was never married.
