January 14, 1926 - Storm Lake Register - Mrs. C.H. Nitzke and daughter, Miss Lillian, were at Varina Wednesday, to attend the funeral of their brother and uncle, August Porath, well known resident of that place, who passed away last Sunday following an illness of some time.

Mr. Porath is survived by his sons: Dr. W.C. Porath of Varina, Charles Porath of near Varina, and Dr. F.E. Porath of Chicago, and his daughters, Mrs. Jacob Houser of Varina, and Mrs. Carl Klutz of Chico, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. C.H. Nitzke of Storm Lake, and Mrs. Hannah Dagner of Washburn, N.D., and other relatives and hosts of friends.

June 15, 2002 - Storm Lake Times - Porath families. More than any other, this family was the most instrumental for Pommern families coming to America. Ernst and Wilhelm arrived in 1868. August, his family and siblings, Friederike, Albertina and Johanne arrived in March, 1873, from Hermelsdorf, Naugard. His sister, Wihelmine, came at the same time with her husband, Carl Schumann. Dorothea Strassmann-Sternke, mother of Friederike Porath, also came at the same time.

The families came because they did not want their children to risk their lives in wars and they came to be able to own their own land. They first settled in Newell township, then Coontownship. Many Pommern families were helped (passenger tickets and a place to stay when they first arrived) by August and his family.

August became a pastor of his church and donated the land for the church in Coon Township. After retiring, he moved to Varina where he served in various (elected) city positions.

Friederike Porath married Christoph Nitzke and Johanne married Wilhelm Degner. Wilhelm Porath married Gustave Johnson. Albertina, who died in 1889 of TB, was the first person buried in the Coon Township Cemetery.
