Ora Ann Carl was born February 17, 1894, on the family farm north of Mount Vernon, Missouri. She was the daughter of Robert and Adina (Witthaus) Carl.Ora Ann was a registered nurse who volunteered her services with the American Red Cross in World War I, serving in New York, France and Germany. After the war, she helped pioneer the public health nursing program in Missouri. On February 21, 1930, she married William H. Rigby whom she had met during the war when he was an ambulance driver. They lived for a time in Ohio and Oklahoma before returning to Missouri. Ora Ann established a nursing home, "The Hedges", on the Mount Vernon farm. She died February 1, 1963, in a fire which destroyed the home, after saving two people and returning to try to rescue two others.
