STEPHEN CURRAN "STEVE" GUTERMUTH, 72, of North Port, Fla., landed with the Lord on runway "Three Six" Sunday May 24, 2009, 2 p.m., on Indy 500 Race Day. "He made his final approach in the loving arms of his family. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed." Born April 3, 1937, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of his loving parents, Clarence Harman Gutermuth and Helen Julia Curran; they preceded him in death. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 32 years, Barbara A. (Seitz) Gutermuth. Steve was a graduate of Fort Wayne Central Catholic High School and attended IPFW. He served six years in the U.S.M.C.R. as a signalman poised for deployment during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal. He lived 42 years in Muncie, where he raised his family. He retired in 1993 from Nabisco, Inc. where he spent 34 years as a salesman. In the trade, he was known as a "Walking Cookie Crumb." Chips Ahoy!® and Oreos® were his favorites. Sitting outside and reading the paper was one of his most simple pleasures. In retirement, he pursued his love for aviation in his Cessna 150, tail number 18689, until Hurricane Charley grounded him in 2004. He leaves a legacy of kindness and love as his gift to us all. He is survived by his devoted family: second wife, Lorraine T. Gutermuth; son, Stephen D. Gutermuth; daughter-in-law, Judy L. Gutermuth; grandson, Adam Curran Gutermuth of Whiteland, Ind.; son, Daniel C. Gutermuth of Cape Coral, Fla.; daughter, Lisa A.
