Obituary of Lewis Kah

LEWIS KAH, PIONEER OF SHELBY COUNTY DIED AT HIS HOME IN ANNA TODAY.

Thursday, November 11, 1909. He died without having a disease, his strength gradually giving away. With God and the voice of prayer at his bedside, he fell asleep very gently in Jesus his Saviour, November 11th, a little after 10 a.m. He reached an age of 90 years, 1 month, and 113 days, and leaves to mourn his death his five daughters, 20 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, two sisters, besides many other relatives.

Lewis Kah was born in the village of Lichenau, Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany, on September 29, 1819. He was there baptized and later on confirmed as a member of the Lutheran church. His inclination and love of music showed itself then already. He was employed as an assistant teacher and gave lessons in singing and on instruments.

In the spring of 1845, he came to America with other of his friends and acquaintances and here he continued his work in music, playing with a band and leading and instructing some 25 bands from Ohio. His music took him well over the country and made him a much traveled man.

Novermber 18, 1846, he was united in marriage to Miss Salome Ludwig, the ceremony being performed in Cincinnati. This union was blessed with six daughters, of whom one has passed away a number of years ago. His faithful wife, with whom he lived over fifty-eight years, died on December 20, 1904.

Mr. Kah came to Dinsmore township in 1849, and had made than township his home until the end. August 13, 1862, he enlisted as a private at Camp Dennison in Company K, 20th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was promoted to principal musician. This regiment belonged to the 17th corps of the Army of Tennessee, which engaged in many battles at Fort Donaldson, Tennessee, Shiloh, Siege of Jackson, and Assault on Vicksburg, etc.

Since the Columbus convention in 1854, which organized the Republican party, he was always a staunch believer of the principles of that party. Lewis Kah was one of the foremost citizens, and a public benefactor. He was a type of that German stock which seeks the elevation of the people through the channels of education and art. It is a stock which once entertaining and opinion, dares stand by that conviction single handed, irrespective of mercenary considerations.

In younger days, he was actively instrumental in developing northern parts of the county. Mr. Kah helped to found the village of Anna and was active in a number of business enterprises, stores, mills, hotels, etc. He had been identified with many enterprises in and about Anna, and was instrumental in securing the C.H.&D. depot at Anna. He was chiefly instrumental in securing the location of the German Lutheran church at Anna, and always contributed liberally to the church.

In an old brick church, five miles south of Anna, he gathered the young people and others for singing, organized and conducted a choir and regular singing socities. He served his church as an officer of the church councils in different capacities, as deacon and as elder. When the frame church in Anna was built in 1870, he was one of the building committee. He also acted as Sunday School Superintendent for a score of years.

In his old age, he passed away quietly in his pleasant home with one of his daughters and a grand daughter. As God prolonged his days far beyond the ordinary time of life, so he also gave him an abundance of the joys of old age. He was active almost to the last. He thoroughly enjoyed the life and progress about him. With his old age and cheerfulness of spirit, he was an example for others who are too ready to complain. He was always cheerful and well pleased.
