Berryton-- Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Berryton for William LeRoy Ackerman, 67, Berryton, who died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at home. He had amyloidosis.

He was born Dec. 1, 1934, in Colfax, Wash. to Lloyd and Ada Lavida DeHart Ackerman. He was employed by Santa Fe Railway from February 1958 until July 1991 when he retired. He lived in California before he moved to Topeka in 1969. He lived in (ed. note: moved to?) the Berryton community in the early 1970's.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, having held the rank of sergeant in the Marine Corps.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Berryton and was a lay leader, a youth leader and a Sunday school teacher at the church. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Berryton, the Santa Fe Golf League at Lake Shawnee Golf Course, Promise Keepers, and Wagonears Camping Club. He was active in several Topeka bowling leagues.

He married Peggy Merritt on Sept. 27, 1957, in Spokane, Wash. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Greg L. Ackerman, Topeka; a daughter, Janet L. Gentry, Berryton; two sisters, Janice VanTassel, Stevens Point, Wis. and Miriam Lowery, Stockton, Calif., and two grandchldren.

Burial will b in Lynn Creek Cemetery in the Berryton community. Mr. Ackerman will lie in state after 9 a.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel Funeral Home in Topeka, where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, 7010 S.E. Berryton Road, Berryton 66409.
