Samuel Honebrink, 87, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at St. Benedict's Senior Community, St. Cloud.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday June 6, at St. John Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, with Rev. Aaron Zuch officiating. Honorary casket bearers include all of Sam's grandchildren. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Ecklund-Holmstrom Post 117, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2793 and the Army National Guard Honor Guard. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Samuel Asher Honebrink was born March 27, 1921 in Rice Lake, Wis., to William and Gudrun (Nord) Honebrink. He grew up in Sauk Rapids and graduated from high school in Sauk Rapids.
Sam was united in marriage to Myrtle "Mickey" Geske on June 19, 1942 in Grand Forks, N.D. They made their home in Thief River Falls. Shortly after Sam and Mickey's marriage, Sam joined the US Army. He served his country during World War II throughout the European Theater as a radar crewman, technician fifth grade.
Sam worked most of his life for the school district in Thief River Falls as a bus mechanic and driver. Sam moved in August 2007 to the St. Benedict's Senior Community in St. Cloud, to be closer to his family.
Sam volunteered and served on the Inter county nursing board for many years. He enjoyed reading, gardening, watching international TV sports and news programs He enjoyed his daily conversations with the coffee clutch at McDonald's for many years in the morning. In St. Cloud he looked forward to his Sunday morning family breakfast at the Copper Lantern. He also enjoyed small engine repair and carpentry projects as well as amateur aviation. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion Posts in Thief River Falls and St. John's Lutheran Church.
He is survived by two children, Dr. Steven (Marilyn) Honebrink, St. Cloud, Ashlyn (Larry) Hall, Minot, N.D.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carol (Harold) Gerdes, Rochester, Kathryn (Larry) Mellema, Ione, Calif., sister-in-law, Alyce Geske, Thief River Falls; brother-in-law, Lloyd Geske, St. Paul and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife Myrtle on September 10, 2007; his parents; and three brothers, John, Eric and Ernie Honebrink.
Sam thought of St. Benedict's as his home and was pleased and happy to live there. As a family we extend our special and memorable thank you to all who cared for him and cared for his home.
