Ruth Marie Manross, 90 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at the Buchanan County Health Center following a short illness. She was born on January 13, 1919, in Fayette County, Iowa, the daughter of Jess Albert and Saloma (Hausler) Neil. She graduated from high school in Oran, Iowa, with the Class of 1936. On March 20, 1945, she and Lowell Lynn Manross were married in Fairbank, Iowa. In addition to caring for her home and family, Mrs. Manross was the manager of the canteen at the Mental Health Institute in Independence for many years. She retired in 1984. Mrs. Manross was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. She was active in the quilting group and she made mittens for Christmas missions work. She was a former Sunday School and Bible School Teacher. She was also a member of the Buchanan County Health Center Auxiliary and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She and her husband enjoyed dancing and traveling. They wintered in Texas for many years.

Mrs. Manross is survived by her husband of 64 years, Lowell, 2 daughters, Nancy (John) Willard of Independence, Iowa, and Diane (Dean) Reck of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and 1 brother, Leon Neil of Oelwein, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 1 grandson.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2009, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence with Pastor Tom Jones officiating. Music will be provided by Mrs. Mark Thomas, organist, and Mrs. Daryl Johnson, Jr., vocal soloist. Casket Bearers will be Tim Reck, Gabe Golla, Jay Orent, Dennis VanLaningham, Larry VanLaningham, Marcus Boog, and Scott VanLaningham. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery in Independence.
