Cashmere

Mary D. Griffiths, 94, a longtime Cashmere resident, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002 at the Cashmere Convalescent Home.

Mary was born June 10, 1907, in Naponee, NE, the daughter of Juliana and Peter Doberstein. She graduated in 1923, at the age of 16. She took the certification exam for teachers and taught for one year.

Mary was united in marriage to O.O. Griffiths on Aug. 29, 1923, in Philipsburg, KS. They made their home in Kansas until 1924, when they moved to Omak. They drove a Model T Ford on their cross-country journey. They lived in Omak until 1927, when they moved to Cashmere.

Mary was a past president of the Cashmere Valley Garden Club. One of her greatest loves and pastimes was her yard, flowers and garden. She could make anything thrive by her touch and nurturing. She had 30 years of service at the Chelan County Fair; she was the driving force of the Floral Building and in charge of this building for 30 years. She received a 30-year appreciation award from the county for her time, devotion and untiring attitude. She was also a member of the Dahlia Society. Mary was active in Eastern Star as well and she received her 50-year pin, was a Worthy Matron and a Rainbow Girl Advisor. Mary was also very involved in the orchard business, as was her family. She enjoyed cooking, canning, crafts and sewing. She was a longtime member of the Cashmere First Baptist Church and taught Sunday school. Mary was robust, independent, hardworking and had a strong faith.

Two daughters survive her, Donna Burns of Bellevue, Patty Adams and her husband Don of Portland, OR; her daughter-in-law, Yvonne Griffiths of Cashmere; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Seven brothers, one sister, her husband, son and one grandson preceded her in death.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Cashmere First Baptist Church.
