EAST VASSALBORO, ME -- Patricia L. Gauer, 65, of East Vassalboro passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 13, 2009, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Campus in Waterville, after a long illness.

Patricia was born on March 12, 1944, in Waterville, the daughter of Richard L. and Evelyn (Roy) McClay.

Pat was educated in Waterville parochial schools and graduated from Mount Merci Academy. Pat graduated from Colby College in 1965 with a bachelor's degree in French and a minor in Spanish. She spent the summer after her junior year studying at the University of Mexico in Mexico City. She began her teaching career in 1965, teaching Spanish at Bangor High School.

In August of 1966, she married Ernest Gauer at St. Francis de Sales Church in Waterville. They enjoyed 43 years of wonderful married life. Pat came to Waterville Junior High in 1966 and spent 20 years teaching French and Spanish before moving on to Waterville Senior High, where she taught French for the next 13 years. She also taught part-time at Thomas College and at the Let's Talk Language School in Waterville. Pat was active in the Waterville Teachers' Association and was past president of the Foreign Language Association of Maine. She was also an active member in the Franco-American Heritage Society.

Pat was known as a wonderful cook and enjoyed putting her "gourmet" dinner parties for her friends and enjoyed baking with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling. Her travels took her to all lower 48 United States and many foreign nations. She particularly enjoyed her many trips to Canada where she could utilize her French-speaking skills. These skills also came in handy while she accompanied the high school French Club on many excursions to Europe.

Pat was predeceased by her mother, Evelyn (Roy) McClay.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest Gauer of East Vassalboro; a daughter, Karen Bushey and her husband, Randy, of Freeport; a son, Paul Gauer and his wife, Hope, of North Waterboro; her father, Richard L. McClay Sr. of Fairfield; sisters, Elaine Albright and her friend, Earl Beard, of New Bern, N.C., and Mary Jean Stephens and her husband, Ray, of Augusta; a brother, Richard L. McClay Jr. of Portland; grandchildren, Paige and Joshua Bushey of Freeport, Taylor and Gunner Gauer of North Waterboro and several nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 22, in the chapel of the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
