Deputy Sheriff Margena S Nunez of Lehigh Acres, Florida was born and raised in Jamaica, moving to New York after high school. Eventually, landing in Florida in 1991. Her father was a police officer, but she had no plans to the same path. She originally wanted to become a nurse. But after working as a certified nursing assistant for a while, she joined the corrections bureau of the Lee County Sheriff's Office as a records assistant in 1998. From there, she worked and studied her way up, becoming a corrections officer in 2002 and a road deputy in 2005. Officer Nunez served in the Lee County Sheriff's Office for seven years where she was assigned to the East District substation. Affectionately called "mama" by her family, she mothered not just her own children but also her sisters, brothers and their children. She hoped to one day become a school resource officer. Officer Numez was struck and killed by a drunk driver while directing traffic at an accident scene.
