12 Btry Field Arty, Sp Am War His birth year: He can be found on the 1880 Census as "1 month old". This census was taken in June 1880. On his WWI Draft Card, which he signed, his birth date is recorded as 24 May 1880. I think he lied about his age, so he could enlist in the Army in 1898 without parental consent (which was required at the time for an 18 year old).

INDIAN WARS
PHILIPPINE-AMERICAN WAR

The 3rd US Infantry regiment participated in what is considered to be the "final" Indian uprising in Oct 1898 - the battle of Sugar Point, MN. Then, the regiment was shipped out to the Philippines. He was likely transferred to the 12th Field Artillery while in the Philippines. He was discharged while onboard the USAT Grant on 1 Sep 1901, as it returned to the states.

(The headstone is incorrect. He did not participate in the Spanish-American War)
