Birth name was Stefano Amato Grosso. Sometime after 1918 Americanized last name to "Gross". Obituary:
Suffering a stroke on Memorial Day following an accident inwhich his two young granddaughters were severly injured by an automobile, Stefano Amato Gross of 212 South Tenth Street, died at 7 o'clock, Tuesday evening at his home. His age was 71. The children, Arlene, eight, and Anita, four, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Gross of Leisenring avenue darted in front of a car in South Eighth street. Arlene is in a critical condition in a Pittsburgh hospital. Anita is convalescing at her home. Mr. Gross was born in Nusco, Italy and had come to this country when he was 17 years old. A former employee of the West Penn Railways Company, he was retired in 1949. He was a charter member of Santa Amato Lodge, Sons of Italy and the Columbus Fraternal Society. Surviving are his wido, Mrs. Michelina Gross; five children, Michael of Lemont Furnace, Anthony, Charles and Mrs. Angeline Della Donna of Connellsville, and Philomena Mildred Gross of Pittsburgh; three brothers in Italy; 20 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A prayer service will be held at the home at 8:30 o'clock Saturday morning followed by requiem high mass at 9 o'clock at St. Rita's R. C. Church, of which deceased was a member, with Rev.
