Solomon B. "Solly" Staebler, 88, of Billings passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 1, 2005, at the Deaconess Billings Clinic.

Solly was born on Nov. 18, 1916, in Wishek, N.D., to John and Anna (Krein) Staebler, the oldest of 11 brothers and sisters.

Solly moved to Billings in 1938 and met his sweetheart, Marian Walter. They were united in marriage on Oct. 8, 1941. Following their marriage, Solly served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, Solly returned to Billings to start his family. Solly worked in the agricultural feed and seed business for 35 years, developing many friendships with farmers and ranchers throughout Montana. He retired in 1983.

Solly is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marian; his son, Steve of Billings; his daughter, Carol (Mike) Fleming of Huntley; his grandchildren, Curt (Jamie) Fleming, Craig Fleming and Keri Staebler, all of Billings. He is also survived by four sisters and two brothers.

Solly and Marian were charter members of Peace Lutheran Church, remaining active for many years. Solly was a jack of all trades, always wanting to fix or repair what might be broken. He always gave of himself freely and never asked for anything in return.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Home, where Solly was a past board member.
