MARY RITA PFEIFER BARRE — Mary Rita Pfeifer, 74, of 338 N. Main St., Barre, died July 13, 2001, at her home. Since May 1994, she had been a member of St. Monica parish. She was born in Detroit, Mich., on Sept. 17, 1926, the daughter of Charles Pfeifer and Mary Calkins Pfeifer, joining two older brothers, Charles 8, and Edward, 6.

The family moved to Montpelier in 1931, where they attended St. Augustine Church, and the children were enrolled in St. Michael's Grade School and High School. In 1948, she graduated from the College of Mount St. Vincent in Riverdale, N.Y., having majored in art. Three years later, after receiving the Cardinal Spellman Scholarship for study in the fine arts, she did graduate work for one academic year in Florence, Italy, at Pius XII Institute, known locally as the Villa Schifanoia.

Later in her life, as a member of the Sinsinawa Dominican Order, she taught art in parochial high schools in Chicago, Omaha and Minneapolis. At that time also, she continued graduate work in the fine arts at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Returning to lay life, she taught art in the Montpelier public schools and served as state arts consultant in the Department of Education. She left this position to open the Right Angle, an art studio and supply shop in Montpelier. Immediately after her year in Florence, she accepted a position with War Relief Services, now called Catholic Relief Services. She worked on the United States Escapee Program, both in Austria and in the then Free Territory of Trieste. Years later, she resumed that interest by returning to work with CRS, both in Rome and in New York. This time, for almost 11 years, she was assigned to projects and problems occurring in the Middle East, North Africa and Southern Europe.

In 1988, she retired to Vermont, where failing health limited her activity but did allow her to do some drawing and painting, and to work on papers willed to her by a deceased friend and mentor, Monsignor Joseph J. Harnett, in Catholic Relief Services. Here also, she took great
pleasure in the company of her surviving brother, Edward, his wife, Joan Sheehey Pfeifer, and their four children, Justine, Elizabeth, Charles and Martin, with their spouses and children. She remained in close contact with Muriel Latham Pfeifer, the widow of her older brother, Charles, who predeceased her in 1978.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Guare & Sons Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Monica Church, Summer Street, Barre. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery in Montpelier. Contributions are not encouraged. Readers are asked to remember Rita in their prayers, whatever form those may take.
