Butler Township was constituted on June 4, 1838, by the county commissioners in accord with a requet of 25 petitioners living in the area. The first election was held July 9, 1838 at the home of David Guy. Records do not indicate who was the first stettler in the township, however, Joseph Shatto, who located near the present site of Coldwater in 1828, generally is given that honor. Other early arrivals wer James Gray in 1835, Peter Stevens in 1837, John F. Hickman, Jerimiah Plummer, Jakcob Baker 1836, William Bunch 1839, Hohn Grunden and David Gray. Other arrivals up to 1858 were Henry Lennarts 1848, John Spoltman 1849, Joseph H. Smith 1852, John Bennet and Herman Nieberding 1855, Joseph Birkmeyer 1857 and Henry Roether 1858.
The first church organized n Butler Township was St. Marys Catholic at Philothea Sept. 6, 1851. The first building was a log cabin and the present structure was built in 1871. Holy Trinity Catholic church in Coldwater was formed in 1869 and the first pastor was Rev. Henry Drees. coldwater Methodist churc was organized about 198. Three other congregations formed in Butler were Spring Valley, Burntwood U.B. and Ash Grove German Baptist Brethren.
Old schools in the township were Burntwood No. 1 and 2, Ebbing School, Smith School, Franzer School, Crouch School and Philothea Special School. Presently Coldwater Exempted Village School is the only school left in the township.
