Peter J. Nikolaisen Sr., a businessman who led a committee assigned to raise more than $1 million in private donations for the commissioning of the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman, died Saturday (June 30, 2007) of respiratory failure at Brooking Park in Chesterfield. He was 86 and lived in Chesterfield.

In 1996, Mr. Nikolaisen was appointed by the late Gov. Mel Carnahan to serve as chairman of the Truman Commissioning Committee. The commission raised more than $1.4 million in private donations. The money paid for amenities that tax money didn't cover, such as a high-tech learning center.

In the 1950s, Mr. Nikolaisen founded Luigi's Restaurant and Frozen Pizza Inc. The business operated Luigi's restaurants in the St. Louis area and distributed frozen pizzas to food stores in 30 states and overseas. He later founded Sunset 44 Restaurant in Sunset Hills.

Mr. Nikolaisen was past chairman of the James S. McDonnell USO at Lambert Field and a past president of the St. Louis Advertising Club.

Mr. Nikolaisen was the son of Henry Peter and Julia Drexler Nikolaisen. He was born in St. Louis and graduated from Cleveland High School. In World War II, Mr. Nikolaisen joined the Army Air Forces and was stationed in England.

A memorial visitation will be held from 3 p.m. Thursday until the memorial service at 5:30 p.m. at Schrader Funeral Home, 14960 Manchester Road in Ballwin. The body was cremated.

Among the survivors are his wife of 59 years, Laverne C. Betz Nikolaisen; two sons, Peter J. Nikolaisen Jr. of Wildwood and Mark E. Nikolaisen of Chesterfield; a daughter, Lynne R. Nikolaisen of Manchester; two brothers, William Nikolaisen of Waterloo and Leroy Nikolaisen of St. Louis; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the James S. McDonnell USO, Box 10367, St. Louis, Mo. 63145; or Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, 4488 Forest Park Avenue, Suite 101, St. Louis, Mo. 63105.
