Jeff was 5ft 9in tall, fair complected, blue eyed, and black headed. At 21 years old, he enrolled at Estill Springs, KY., as a Private, on the 21st of September 1861, in Company C, 8th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry under Captain John Wilson. In November of 1862 he contracted chronic diarrhea and resulting disease of the stomach from exposure and bad food. He also incurred varicose veins of both legs from long hard marching. He was left sick at Glasgow, Kentucky and sent to the hospital at Bowling Green. He left the hospital at Bowling Green at his own request because, he said, “the treatment being so rough at that place, I thought I had as soon risk my chances front as there.” From March to October of 1864, he was detached from the regiment as a train guard. He was mustered out of the service at Chattanooga, Tennessee, on the 17th of November, 1864.
On January 18, 1877 he married Mary (Molly) Fluty in Estill County. They lived at Station Camp, Irvine, and West Irvine. They had at least two children, Charles Russell, nicknamed "Stickhorse Charlie", Born May 30, 1883 and Robert Fluty, born September 5, 1887.
From 1865 to 1871 Jeff farmed for a living; from 1871 to 1879 he was in the mercantile business; from 1879 until November of 1881 he again farmed. At this time he received an appointment as the Common School Commissioner of Estill County. At the completion of this duty, he again ran a small store until 1886. In 1886 he was appointed Master Commissioner of the Estill County Circuit Court.
Jeff died in West Irvine on the 7th of March, 1914. He is buried in the Brutus Gum Cemetery (WGS84 GPS coordinates: 37.6719° N, 84.0263° W) in Estill County, KY. Molly died in 1939 and is buried in the same cemetery.
