Melvin Cecil Grothe

Melvin Cecil Grothe, 79, St. Charles was born April 11, 1922 at Billings, Montana a son of Louis Benjamin and Mary Evelyn Hood Grothe and died at 2:42 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001 in St. Joseph Hospital in St. Charles.
Mr. Grothe was united in marriage on June 30, 1947, at Belle, to the former Miss Waneta Lavern Schwegler and to this union six children were born. He was preceded in death by one son, James Edward Grothe on June 6, 1966; his father; his mother on Jan. 30, 1988; and one grandson, Timothy Michael Edwards.
Mr. Grothe was a World War II United States Army Veteran. He was a powerhouse mechanic at McDonnell Corporation in St. Louis and retired after 38 1/2 years, on March 31, 1988.
Survivors include: his wife Waneta Grothe of the home in St. Charles; one son, Douglas and Susan Grothe of St. Charles; four daughters, Barbara and Michael Edwards of O'Fallon, Pamela and Glenn Wagner of St Charles, Cheryl and Neal Buschmann of Vienna, and Evelyn Ball of O'Fallon; 10 grandchildren, Douglas Grothe, Lydia Wagner, Nathan Edwards, Jennifer Wagner, Amanda Wagner, Crystal Ball, Daniel Edwards, Christina Edwards, Emily Buschmann and Louis Buschmann and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday , Oct. 27, 2001, in the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes with Bro. Charles Pitts, Dixon and Bro. Kenneth Ware, Harvester Church Of Christ in St. Peters, officiating. The Vienna Church of Christ singers sang "Amazing Grace", "Beyond the Sunset", "Precious Memories, "In The Shadow of His Wings", "In The Land of Fadeless Day" and "Where The Roses Never Fade" for the funeral service.
Interment with full military honors was in the Bethel Cemetery in Vienna, under the direction of the Vienna Chapel of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home. Members of the military honors group from Liesmann-Roberts American Legion Post No. 298, Dixon, were Bill Robbins, Wilbur Warman, Bill Harrison, John Thilges, Basil Rushing and Bob Leonard. Pallbearers were Douglas Grothe, Neal Buschmann, Michael Edwards, Douglas Grothe, Glenn Wagner and Nathan Edwards. Honorary pallbearers were Amanda Wagner and Crystal Ball.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to the Melvin C. Grothe Memorial Fund with envelopes available at the Vienna Office of the Birmingham-Martin Funeral Homes.
